Dates, Forms and Umm Kulthum
Palmeraie and their unique sense of time.
My early travels to Morocco, initially for assignments, stirred something deep within me—a connection to the country’s mythical stories and their unique sense of time. It felt strangely familiar, almost like a homecoming, resonating with my own roots and the way I perceive time. Drawn to the oasis just outside the city, I embarked on a photographic journey to document life in the Palmeraie of Marrakech. Driven by an unyielding devotion to capturing beauty, perfection, and emotionally charged images, I found inspiration in the letters of Tina Modotti, and Edward Weston. This led me to explore an intimate, invigorating relationship between myself, as the photographer, and Yasmina Alaoui, a fellow artist, frequent subject, and muse. With my Leica and Rolleiflex in hand, I sought to capture not just the perfect negative, but the perfect moment—a moment that feels suspended in time, blurring the line between observer and participant. These images, spanning a decade, reflect a desire to slow down time, to hold onto fleeting moments and the emotions they carry.
